Perfect for beginners and a quick sewing project!
Materials:
Outer fabric
Lining fabric
Fusible interfacing
Zipper (at least the length of the pouch's top curve)
Thread
Scissors or rotary cutter
Pins or clips
Instructions:
Cut the Fabric: Download the free pattern (2 sizes provided) and cut 2 pieces each of the outer fabric, lining fabric, and interfacing.
Attach the Interfacing: Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric pieces for structure.
Sew the Zipper
Pin the zipper, right side down, to the curved edge of one outer fabric piece.
Layer a lining fabric piece (right side down) over the zipper, aligning edges.
Sew along the curve using a zipper foot.
Repeat for the other side of the zipper with the remaining outer and lining fabric.
Topstitch the Zipper: Press the fabric away from the zipper and topstitch for a clean finish.
Assemble the Pouch
Open the zipper halfway.
Pin the outer fabric pieces right sides together, and do the same with the lining.
Sew around the edges, leaving a gap in the lining for turning.
Finish Up: Turn the pouch right side out through the lining gap. Stitch the gap closed, tuck the lining in, and give it a final press.
If you'd like, you can add an applique to the outer fabric. Raw edge applique is a great option for beginners since it's much easier to learn than needle-turn applique. All you need is some Double-sided fusible webbing to get started!
How It’s Done:
Prepare the Fabric with Fusible Webbing:
Iron a piece of fusible webbing onto the wrong side of your fabric, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Draw the Design:
On the paper backing of the fusible webbing, draw your preferred pattern or design. You can also print the design directly onto the fusible webbing before attaching it to the fabric.
Cut the Shape:
Carefully cut out the shape along the lines you’ve drawn.
Fuse to the Base Fabric:
Peel off the paper backing, position the shape on the base fabric, and fuse it in place by ironing according to the fusible webbing instructions.
In my design, I start by applying the applique to a piece of white batting, then trim it slightly larger than the applique to create a nice white outline around it. After that, I sew the whole piece onto the outer fabric and finish it off with a blanket stitch for a polished look.
Sew the Edges:
Secure the applique with a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, or decorative stitch around the edges. This not only keeps the shape in place but also adds durability and a finished look.
